Ingredients Needed to Cook a Good Short Story

Short story collection

Image via Wikipedia

To hold the reader’s attention your hero must face a crisis or dilemma that demands his immediate and full attention. Overcoming it should be tricky or awkward. Not overcoming it will have serious repercussions. There is a strong likelihood he will fail. And the solution he devices has to be unexpected and ingenious.

In short a short story must have a plot that is strong enough to sustain interest. There must be incidents - a chain of events. There must be a crisis to be resolved. There must be a drama and actions to follow!

A common error is to confuse the basic set-up of the story – the opening crisis or situation – with the plot. The plot is what happens from there – how the events unfold.

A good basic structure looks like this: Introductionmain character faces a worrying conflict/problem/dilemma, Middle – in flashback we learn of the background and events that led up to the conflict and Ending – the conflict is satisfactorily resolved.

Another workable structure is to have a hero who has a goal he desperately needs to achieve – and then put obstacles in his way.

There is No Right or Wrong Way to Plot a Story

  • Fiction writers should realize that there is no right or wrong way to plot a story – just different ways. As long as your tale holds the reader’s attention, entertains and delights, then the method you use to achieve this end is as valid and effective as anyone else’s.
  • Some fiction writers do all the hard work in their heads, mulling over ideas, developing them, trying out different permutations until they come up with a workable storyline and then rush to write them as swiftly as possible.
  • To add the flavor a story should show conflict which is about anything or anyone that upsets the smooth-running of your main character’s life. It can be internal such as a crisis of faith, a fear to be overcome or a problem created by a flaw in the character’s own personality.
  • Good drama looks at what happens when the extraordinary occurs. It shows how people feel the unusual and unexpected circumstances. Aim for a nail-biting finish. Keep the readers holding his breath until the last word.
  • The more you place your hero in jeopardy the stronger the tension. Tingling anticipation and dread will hold readers glued.

Make Your Stories Light, Positive and Up-beat

Readers want to be taken out of themselves for a few minutes, whisked off to a world where exciting and intriguing things happen. They want their fiction to be different – more Technicolor than real life. They read to escape drudgery and dullness, so always try for setting and plots that break away from the commonplace and mundane.

  • The plot is the most important factor in a short story and nothing – but nothing should hold it up or challenge it for the reader’s attention. See also if you can have a circular or return ticket plotline where the story brings you back to the point at which the narrative started.
  • Also readers can get enough depression at home with red bills, ringing phones, noisy neighbors, demanding kids and grumpy spouses. They don’t need or want to read a depressing tale, so make your stories light, positive and up-beat.
  • Another way of plotting is the shaggy dog story. The writer builds up conflict, piles on suspense and then unexpectedly produces a comic punch line. Always try to deal with topics in a way that leaves the reader feeling uplifted and full of hope.
  • Have storylines that show characters taking charge of their own destiny and standing up for themselves. There is no such thing as an original plotline so it’s important that you find a new treatment that will make a storyline crackle with originality.
  • Keep the readers guessing. The more choices your hero has, the less predictable the storyline becomes. And having a simple theme to your story is great but don’t set out to give it a moral. You’ll end up a sermon or a piece of propaganda!

Another way of dreaming up plots is to look at proverbs and well known sayings and investigate what associations they spark in your mind.

Sex Education is One of My Advocate Subjects

Human tongue. Regional preference to salty, so...

High School is the most interesting phase of school life. On this stage new things and experiences are to be explored and to be enjoyed by young students. Also on this stage is the hot point for them to start to attract the opposite sexes.

Biology was My Favorite Subject

I still remember my favorite subject. It was biology that includes the parts and functions of the human body. I learned from that subject that our red blood cell is formed of molecules. If we saw it by our human eyes they are conjoined but if we will see it through a microscope the molecules of our blood are not hooked up as one. We also used the microscope to know how our semen looks like. We also learned that if we saw it by our human eyes they are the same as our red blood cell joined together but if we will see them through the power of microscope its molecules have its own space moving and stretching around.

The Five Sense Organs

And we also studied the five sense organs. We considered them as the most interesting part of our biology subject. Everybody in the classroom behaved while listening to our mentor, who was at that time a lady teacher. We jotted down all what she taught to us.

We have learned about the power of our eyes for sight or vision. Many poets described them as the gates for our souls but for me I described them as the gates for our sins.

The First to See and Perceive

Our eyes are the first to see and perceive what we see before sending them into our mind or brain. It is now the job of our brain to describe and to figure out what our eyes have seen. If our brain is full of humor, it can describe that particular thing or incident in a very colorful and lively conception.

Our Ears for Hearing or Audition

Then we discussed about the power of our ears for hearing or audition. We learned that our ears are responsible to detect the vibrations of any sound through an avenue such air. If we will see the anatomy of our ear, inside it is a section responsible to ascertain the mechanical motion and other vibrations before sending them to our brain.

The Power of Our Tongue and Mouth

Then our study was followed about the power of our tongue for taste and the power of our mouth to bite, to eat, to drink and to speak. We learned that it is the responsible of our tongue to identify and to differentiate sweet from salty, sour from bitter taste. Many scholars considered our mouth and tongue as the most dirtiest human body parts when it come to speak languages – they believed that the most dirtiest languages spoken by a person are perceived from the power of our mouth and tongue.

The Power of Our Nose

We also discussed about the power of our nose for smell. We learned that it is the responsible of our nose to detect the different types of odors from sweat, pungent odor from stagnant water, odor from our armpits, odor from decaying animals. Our nose can also identify sweet, salty, sour and bitter. And our nose is often used in the school of kindergarten as a subject for a puzzle question like – 1+1=2, 2+2=4, what is my nose for? The kindergarten pupils will answer “To smell Ma’am”.

The Sense of Touch

Then it followed the sense of touch. We learned from our discussion that our hands and fingers are not only the responsible for this sense. We can also use our tongue, mouth, skin, nails and hair for this sense of touch.

These five sense organs are our physiological capacities that provide inputs for perception and they are useful for our sex life and education.

To Live with Virtues will Heal The Tormenting World

Immanuel Kant developed his own version of the...

Image via Wikipedia

First of all, I am not here to tell you what to do. This is about the love of sharing. I thought that the violation of moral virtues in this age and in any other age brings regret, sorrow, loss of self-respect and in many cases, tragedy. Morality requires discipline. Each of us has a conscience. We know the difference between right and wrong. We know when we have done the wrong thing. We know when we have done the right thing, which result in a sense of inner peace and happiness.

What is Morality?

Morality is a sense of behavioral conduct that differentiates intentions, decisions and actions between those that are good and bad. It has two principal meanings – as in descriptive sense, morality refers to personal or cultural values, codes of conducts or social mores that distinguish between right and wrong in the human society. While in normative sense, morality refers directly to what is right and wrong, regardless of what specific individuals think.

Pornography and Infidelity

Pornography is now regarded as a legitimate slice of entertainment and we have to accept it. Pornography robs its victims of self-respect and of an appreciation of the beauties of life. It tears down those who indulge and pulls them into a slough of evil thoughts and possibly evil deeds. It seduces, destroys and distorts the truth about love and intimacy. It is as addictive and self-destructive as illicit drugs and it literally destroys the personal relationships of those who become its slaves.

Infidelity, promiscuity and sexual indulgence, in all their forms come trailing a host of ills – life-threatening disease; the insecurity of sexual involvement without commitment or even without love, in many cases – the deterioration of ones feelings of value and self-worth; the breach of personal integrity; the threat of unwanted pregnancy and many more.

Reformation of The World Begins With Reformation of Us. The challenge to recognize evil and oppose it is one that every moral, virtuous person must accept. It all begins with our own personal virtue. Reformation of the world begins with reformation of us. We cannot hope to influence others in the direction of moral virtues unless we live of virtue. Respect for self is the beginning of cultivating virtue in men and women.

Our challenge is to lift our thoughts above the filth’s, to discipline our acts into an example of virtue, to control our words so that we speak only that which is uplifting and leads to growth. When we stood back to compare the dirty surface with the clean, it was amazing to see how much better the clean surface looked and to notice how dirty the walls have become without our realizing it.

Morality Requires Discipline. It says that both experience and Divine wisdom dictate that moral virtue and cleanliness pave the way that leads to strength of character, peace of mind and heart and happiness in life. As a great moral reformation will occur only as reformation takes place in the hearts, minds and lives of each of us; as morality is reinstated as a priority in the homes of the country; and as men and women, boys, and girls – realizing their lives are missing a critical moral component and determine to seek a life in virtue.

The Most Visited Site: Wikinut

Star- Achievement-badges Wikinut is not an advertising site, a news site or a social networking site. The site is just a plain friendly publishing site that accepts articles of different subject topics written by authors from around the world. Now Wikinut becomes the most visited site and had become one of the favorite sites for the hungry and thirsty search engines crawlers.

My heart beats faster to see the 907 views. My first feeling was I am speechless when I log-on at Wikinut this morning. Everyday when I visited Wikinut, the first thing I had to look at is my Wikinut Stats. Why? My daily views suggest many things such as:

  1. How I can improve my writing capabilities?
  2. How to write articles with relevant and quality contents?
  3. What tools and methods I should use to help attract traffics?
  4. What to do to get more views?
  5. How to share my articles to other networks without spamming?

We all know that the life of every article that we published here are measured by views. Articles without views are nothing but dead – no matter how beautifully we wrote them. This morning my heart beats faster while looking at the 907 views that my article pages received – recorded on October 5, 2011. It was the highest views I received at Wikinut so far. I even considered them not normal – as my daily views from the start of 2011 range between 300 and 400 views.

I do not write and publish article at Wikinut everyday. Even though I do not write article at Wikinut everyday – my daily attendance is 100% perfect. One of the things I perform there are to explore down to some of my old published articles and prepare them to share to social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon and to Google+ site. I also visited other Wikinut writers pages. Sometimes I left comments on them but most of the time I just read them and before leaving their pages I had to choose at least one or two of their articles and shared them off to Twitter and Facebook.

An article about Taboo contents received 501 views that day. My previous article entitled How Far We Can Express of Our Freedom of Expression as Writers on Taboo Contents published at Wikinut on August 24, 2011 received 501 views last October 5, 2011. This is about the negative traditions, objects, or behaviors generally regarded as harmful to social welfare or something that is forbidden by a society as unacceptable or improper – a strong social prohibition relating to any area of human activity or social custom that is sacred and forbidden based on moral judgment and religious beliefs. And it is considered ill-favored or offensive by society.

Another two most viewed articles on October 5, 2011. One is about an important commodity and a popular beverage. The article entitled Is Coffee a Healthy Drink that contents anti-oxidants that are widely used as ingredients in dietary supplements and have been investigated for the prevention of diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease and even altitude sickness. It was published at Wikinut on July 16, 2011.

The other one was Will You Sell Your Tomorrow Through Credit Card. It was published at Wikinut on September 13, 2011. It said that Credit card when used at the right time can help you in emergency and if you don’t have medical insurance you will be accepted much faster in hospital if you have a valid credit card.

I am discovering ways to get more views. For the past few months, I found out that it is not enough to rely on the site that published my articles for traffics and views or to depend on sharing my articles to some social networks and other book marking sites including my personal blog sites. I found another effective way how to get more traffics and views. I focus on search engines also – I submitted my Wikinut Profile Link once a week the same what I am doing here at Triond to Bing, to Yahoo Bookmark and to Google news. These search engines are the root for views and traffics.

How to Maximize The Use of StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon

Image via Wikipedia

Now StumbleUpon has over 20 million stumblers using the site. It is a cool place and has potential to get more views and traffics for your articles. If one percent of the total stumblers viewed your articles pages they are equivalents to 200 thousands views. The site is a free web-browser extension which acts as an intelligent browsing tool for discovering and sharing websites and other awesome stuff across the Internet. So, there is no reason at all if you missed the opportunity. The site is open 24/7 waiting for your visits.

Aside from Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus - you can concentrate and maximize the use of StumbleUpon to get more views and traffics for your awesome articles and other stuff. There are two ways to share articles at StumbleUpon through the normal way and through a feature created by the site called Su.pr. Both are legal and safe to use.

At StumbleUpon, there are two different ways to share our awesome articles to other users such as:

  • Share them through the normal way
  • Share them through a feature called Su.pr

What is sharing the normal way? Sharing the normal way at StumbleUpon is all about sharing your articles links, blog sites links or websites links - where you are asked for the following justifications like:

  • Is the article, blog site or website safe to work or safe to view?
  • What topics, tags or labels you will use?
  • You have to write a review which is optional

This normal way of sharing is intended to over 20 million of stumblers for their votes, likes, views and recommendations or to rate of what you shared on the site.

What is sharing through Su.pr? This is also about sharing your articles links, blog sites links or websites links. Su.pr is a feature created by StumbleUpon and there are thousands of users also using the application for their articles sharing.

The only difference from sharing the normal way to StumbleUpon - any items you shared on this feature are not intended to likes, votes, recommendation or to rate from other users. However, the feature has potential to get views and traffics to your articles - if someone spotted and clicked the link of your article shared there it is automatically counted as view. The feature works like this: Su.pr+Clicks=Views. And with the link of your article you can also add some text before posting. You can also schedule the articles for the dates when to post.

What good at this feature - you can also activate your accounts at Twitter, Facebook and other Pages and e-Groups you created at Facebook for the purpose of sharing of your stuff and what ever items you shared on this site will be automatically be sent off to those sites without doing the job from your side.

What I mentioned above are what I have experienced. Both are effective ways to get more views and traffics to my articles. Of course, I am not insisting this to you to do the same what I have done but if ever you thought that it will work for you too then go ahead and this is my advice - Use both ways. They are all legal and without spamming. But use them responsibly.

The Essential Qualities for a Would-be Writer

Tutor Appreciation 2009

It began when the Writers’ Bureau in Manchester, had offered me a tutorial course in Creative Writing by mail. At first, I was undecided about accepting the offer. My reason was that the English language was not my spoken language. However, it did not diminish my ambition. I accepted the offer.

It was in July 1999, I met my Tutor. She was Ms. Margot Raneri. She believed that self-confidence and dedication are essential qualities for a would-be writer.

The highlights of my tutorial course were my Tutor’s comments, advice and reminders. These three elements have helped me in developing my writing ability. Despite the fact I was a slow learner, I became so aggressive about wanting to learn from the course. I studied the modules in depth, the hundreds of corrections on my works such as, the sentence-constructions, spelling, and spacing, when to use the article a, and an, including the narrative prose, dialogue and thoughts, the action, description of the characters, and the right presentation.

I worked hard. However, still I had the feeling of fear. Fear that I might fail the course.

Nevertheless, my fears were gone when I received my Tutor’s comments on my works. She said I had always devised very interesting ideas for the subject via a straightforward style. I had devised a good atmospheric style, with strong characterization. I had always devised a very interesting storyline that revealed the necessary conflicts and dramatic high spots for a story.

She further advice me that I should study the corrections intently. I should study English, at home either via a grammar-book or at a college, as part of the learning process. That I should learn from my mistakes, as the most vital part of my tutorial course, for these things would benefit me when the course is over.

Market research is a vital importance too, and that I should study in depth those publications, which interest me the most. I should not rush through the course at speed, and I should also write articles, stories in my own language, she said.

All these reminders, advice and comments from my Tutor are the essential elements to consider for myself as part of the learning process. Now I had become so eager to become a writer, with dedication and determination!

To Live a Normal Life is Everyone's Dream

CotIC, Guiuan

Nobody could oppose God conviction, what He had said was final. When He created man, it had been for His love to nourish man’s heart. He had created him according to His will and had taught him to appreciate the beauty to all His creations. Is it fair to see men controlling everything?

Somewhere in 1971, in my home province Samar, Philippines, I would always remember the place where my grandpa and I got used to live in a small village. It was approximately nine to 10 km away from the proper town of Guiuan. To get there, you had to have motors cycles. It would take you 45 minutes to one hour or by a long walk, which was a good exercise.

The folks were friendly and would welcome you with their sweet smiles. Around the village, you could see mountains with green virgin forest – a jump-off point for treks. The villagers were religious people. They had a primary and elementary school where the kids used to love studying. They had a catholic church where there was mass every Sunday. They had a village hall for parties. They had a play ground for children. I really missed the village, a congenial place to live in and to enjoy.

To see Grandpa was Exciting and Memorable

It was summer, the classes were closed for the children to enjoy the summer. I turned eleven. During that summer, I had always used to visit grandpa’s place, which was 3 km away from our home. Grandpa was a widower. He had two sons. One was my father. My grandpa was 65 years old. He used to live in a hut, built of nipa woven leaves and scraped bamboo poles. It was surrounded by a bamboo fence. Surrounding his nipa hut was a vegetable plantation. At the back of his nipa hut was a big mango tree where he got used to sit with his old rocking chair that was made from narra tree.

That morning to see grandpa was exciting and memorable. At his age of 65, nobody could tell he was that dirty old man. He was strong and still could lift up a 50kls of rice. He could be strong to rule over the villagers: they called him “captain”. Grandpa was a religious man. He always loved and used to preach the words of God in the village.

Sometimes in that summer, I had mingled with the villagers for my grandpa’s preaching. He had preached that man would always stand in his nature, in his heart and all his control especially in times of troubles. His preaching was well remembered by the villagers. It had taken us couple of hours for meditations and listening to his preaching before we left for home.

Uncle George had Grown Differently

Uncle George was a math’s professor in a private school in Tacloban, a neighboring province of Samar. He was 30 year old at that time, a bachelor and he also had managed a fast food chain business. Uncle George was 5’8” tall, dark skinned and handsome. When you saw him, you could tell he was really a man in nature for a woman to feel, to touch and to enjoy. But he was gay. I was thinking what would be part of the possibility for Uncle George to live according to my grandpa’s preaching. Some feminine feelings and desires drove him.

At fifteen, Uncle George had discovered that he had grown differently. He had thought and believed it was just a part of growing up. The changes that were taking place inside him were strangely confusing and desirable for a while. He had tried to live a normal life but he had fumbled helplessly. The more he tried to change, the more obvious became his femininity. At other times he had challenged the Lord, for creating him that way – a man living the life of a woman! It was maybe the reason why grandpa had abandoned him!

I would remember that summer, when I asked my grandpa about Uncle George. I could see his face blushed and his voice roared, telling me “Forgets your Uncle, to me he is dead!” I was terrified to hear what he had said to me! It had confused me about his attitude. He’s a religious man, who always loved and used to preach people the words of God but he had never loved his son!

Uncle George was a human. He has been created in God’s own image. Yeah. He was living differently among others. He would have hearts to love and understanding. Would you ignore this person because of his differences? Would you care for him?

Grandpa Died with Hate in his Heart

My grandpa had died in 1985. He was 79 years old and I had known he was a righteous man especially for the villagers. Yet, he had left me feeling confused about his preaching. He had missed the truth, that God had created man for his love, love that would nourish man’s heart and minds to appreciate all His creations. He had died with hate in his heart. His blessings and forgiveness for Uncle George had been closed and locked. But it had kept me remembering the way he was. I missed my grandpa.

Uncle George already retired. He is still a bachelor. He is happy with his life. He said, “Life is the most precious thing that God bestowed upon us. No matter what you are or who you are you have to appreciate it. Know your limitations and enjoy life as prescribed by heaven – that way you fulfill God’s objective.”

Triond Views Versus Wikinut Views

Himala

Himala (Image via RottenTomatoes.com)

I admit that Triond and Wikinut are my most loved paying sites among the six paying sites I am writing with - this includes Hubpage, Bukisa, Allvoices and ExpertsColumn. Triond and Wikinut are both showing some amazing views and traffics to my articles pages. Today I compared the two for views and traffics using the same article which was published on both sites and the result they are too far from each other.

The article I used for this experiment was about Ms. Nora Aunor – the Superstar of Philippine Movie and Entertainment Industry. At Triond the article was published on September 17, 2011 entitled The Superstar Nora Aunor is a History and a Living Library of Great Achievements. From the time it was published at Triond to date – it received a total of 499 views with earnings of 0.94 dollar cents. And this is the highest earner article so far out of the 210 articles I have published at Triond excluding this one if approved.

While at Wikinut the article about Ms. Nora Aunor was published on September 27, 2011 entitled Trivia About The Filipino Superstar Nora Aunor. From the time it was published at Wikinut to date – it received a total of 2,402 views with earnings of 0.120 British pounds. And this is the highest article earner so far out of the 170 articles I have published at Wikinut. At Wikinut I used some photos of La Aunor with some videos of her songs and her remarkable movies like Himala and Minsa’y Isang Gamu-Gamo.

As a matter of fact, I used the same methods of sharing this article to people around the world through the use of social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Stumbleupon, Tumblr, Linkin, My Space, Live Messenger to my blog sites and sending them to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and other book marking tools. Yes. The article published on both sites garnered an amazing views and traffics but one is less than the other. I just assumed that at Triond there are less Noranians while at Wikinut the Noranians are active with lots of love.

My normal daily views at Triond are between 80 to 120 views for the past six months. And one time my Triond page received 325 views on September 21, 2011. Those were my highest views ever recorded that my Triond page received from the date I started writing with this site on August 14, 2010. And the total views that my Triond page received to date has reached so far to 22, 009 views.

While my normal daily views at Wikinut from the start of January 2011 are between 300 to 400 views. And one time my Wikinut page received 2,429 views on October 10, 2011. Those were my highest views ever recorded that my Wikinut page received from the time I started writing with the site on July 28, 2010. And the total views that my Wikinut page received to date has reached so far to 123,520 views. Now I can say that Wikinut stays on top and yet no other sites break its views records!

Foundation of My Faith

The Last Supper of Jesus Christ

Image via Wikipedia

I am a Christian, Roman Catholic. I grew up through its guidance though sometimes I asked, "Was He the same God whom I used to kneel to pray, made out of blocks, wood, stone and clay?"

I was born as thousand are
Where God was never known
Taught to pray a useless prayer
To blocks, woods and stones.

I confess, I am blind
Could not see the truth
I am living with lies and illusions!

But today a peculiar thing happened
I fainted and I started longing
for the greatness of redeeming love
the love of Christ to me!

So, I started my journey to seek the truth
I stroke my fingers on the keyboard
My computer opened the door for me
I paused, asked myself, should I proceed?
Or I’d go back and forget it?

But my curiosity inspired me to go on
I opened the door, got inside, looked here
and there. I kept walking ‘til I reached the place
Where the Holy Writ was resting.

Happiness filled my heart
the treasure was shining brightly
I shouted with joy. My hale
and hearty arms held it up
I kissed it with compassion and love
Then I commenced scanning its Holy pages
And I found these enlightening verses:

Take heed what you read and what you hear
With what measure you mete
It shall be measured to you
And unto you that hear shall more be given
Then go on to know more and more
Of what that treasure is
And glorify your God, without end.

Was He the same God whom I used to kneel to pray?
Who was made out of blocks, wood, stone and clay?
Verily I wondered but my doubt did not alter my desire
Still I read the following text:

God created man and female
In His image and likeness, He created them
For His love and for the purpose to live with Him
And that we must give our highest admiration
And submit to Him, as our only God in return.

Consoled, I said this is it I am looking for
The true God I had long desired
God’s love to His children is lasting
God is a reasonable One
And understanding one in nature
He sent Jesus Christ, His begotten Son
His Son’s Sprinkling Blood save the world
And washed out His children’s sins.

He is the living word
The living water and the living bread
To feed our hungers, thirsts and longings
Jesus is the living light and life of the world
Who could calm us in the hour of buoyant health
In our hour of pain
In our poverty or wealth
In our loss or gain
Who could soothe us with holy hymn and psalm
And bid our spirits rest
That Jesus died for us
That on the cross He shed His blood
From sin to set us free.

Now, I know, it is not yet too late for me
to seek His Holy name and live with Him
with true guidance and pure doctrines
Through Jesus Christ and His teachings.

Happy indeed I found Him the cleansing fountain
where I can always flee
His blood most precious
the sinners’ perfect plea.

Ways to Test Your Blog Site

Blogging at the Crossroads

Image by Mick Orlosky via Flickr

Your blog site is the storefront of your articles and other stuff. It is also a cool place where to share all of your published articles from the different websites you are writing with. Your blog site needs to attract readers and visitors in order to keep them coming back. For that reason you would have to pull up your blog site and ask yourself a few questions.

Normally, when I visit other blog sites I usually asked myself the following:

  1. Where would my eyes go first?
  2. Can I tell what the blog site is about?
  3. Is the information found above the fold is really important?
  4. Are there benefits to enjoy that are clearly highlighted on the homepage?
  5. Is there a clear call to action or a way to communicate with the owner?
  6. Are the colors and fonts used are distracting to the eyes?
  7. Would I feel personally connected on this site?
  8. Are there links found to other social media?

Based from the above questions – I found out that to create a blog site is not far as when writing an article. When you write an article first you have to focus on your article title. You might ask yourself the following: Is it catchy? Or is it an attention grabbing title? Would it attract visitors and readers to read the whole article? Man, it is the same with your blog title – you need to use a title that would attract people to visit your blog site.

Your blog site description is as the same when writing a summary of your article. Your summary is the overall layout of your article body. Your blog description tells the most important section and parts found on your site. It suggests visitors and readers what exactly your blog site is all about.

When writing your article body sometimes you include photos, videos and links. They are normal and very effective method. They help attract readers to read your article. They are part of the overall layout and presentation of your article. And much more if it is written with relevant contents. It is the same with your blog site. You need to include some attractions for your readers and visitors to stay longer.

Some blog sites I visited are equipped with some media tools like: Music videos, Movie videos, MP3s, Photo albums and some with podcasts. Others included Encyclopedia, Dictionary, Social networks and other links going to other websites where the blog site owner is also connected with. Others included chat rooms where the visitors and readers can leave their messages or to chat other visitors.

In a survey – it is found that not all visitors like to read articles published on a site instead, they like listening articles on podcasts, watching music videos and movies, listening MP3 music or scanning the photo album pages to spot unique and awesome photos.

It is not yet too late - once you determine a few areas where you can improve, develop a plan to start implementing changes on your blog site. You don’t have to do them all at once – just do a few at a time until you have a blog site that really attractive to visitors and readers. And if your visitors and readers stay on your site at least 5 minutes long you are lucky and they will keep coming back.

Are You in Favor for Demonstrations and Rallies

Youth Fight For Jobs rallies in Victoria Park ...

Image via Wikipedia

Mr. Jura had decided to join and lead a labor union. He had no idea that a catastrophic event was about to change his life. The new management of the company he worked with had taken over the former management - started reorganization and changed some of the company’s policies. Mr. Jura had worked for seven years as an accounts officer with the company.

The new management hired new personnel and employees. But on a certain account, they used cost – cutting procedure. They used to cut on the number of employees on a certain department. The company had introduced forced labor effectively. It affected to the old employees especially. They obliged their employees to do the jobs and responsibilities as the same as supervisors.

He explained, “I handled so many loan accounts, including monitoring, collections’ procedures, and other legal documentation. I could see that there were discrepancies. Promotions and salary increases were awarded and mostly enjoyed by the newly hired personnel. I have a pending promotion that the company had promised. The harmonious relationship between the employees and the employer had become chaotic. Favoritism had become obvious and the situation became worst.”

Those strategies that the company practiced had increased Mr. Jura’s desire to organize a labor union, of about two hundred members, with the primary objective of protecting the employees against the unfair labor practices of the company.

During his active Leadership – Mr. Jura noted that some of the union members were afraid to negotiate with the employer. He said, “There was a strong warning by the company, to terminate employees involved to such activity.” But despite the management cautionary action, the union stood its ground vigorously and there were more struggles.

“I concluded two Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) with the employer. The first CBA had taken us by eight months to negotiate with the employer. In the middle of negotiation with the company, they offered me promotion and money. But I had never accepted it until it ended up with deadlocked bargaining. Those eight months of bargaining with the employer had brought us too much difficulty. I really needed the money to sustain my mother’s hospitalization and to support my family. It was really hard for me to handle the situation. But this had not affected my strong desire to lead the union. But it was difficult to render a visible protest against the company’s unfair labor practices,” he said.

The plans on a Yes – to – Strike. The union members wore arm – bands with slogans, and had picketed in front of the administration’s building. It took them a month. But the company still did not alter its decision. They felt that their crusade had failed. Their struggles seemed to have no success. These were months of desolation. It affected Mr. Jura greatly. That period of his crusade with the union had made him crippled. His mother’s condition had affected him. The agony had penetrated his heart, brought by the disturbing events, but he had never deviated from his decision. Courageously, they have said, ‘Yes to strike,’ through a consultation with the Department of Labor Employment (DOLE).

The plans on a Yes – to – Strike by the union had worried the company. So the company bribed one of the employees of DOLE to release an assumption order to stop the possible strike of the union. But the union went through with their crusade that urged the company to grant some of their demands.

In that provision, all employees, either union members or non – union members will receive 3% profit shares from the company’s annual income.

According to Mr. Jura, the first and second distributions were in good faith, while the third time of distribution was shocking. They found that the non – members received a greater amount than the union members. This urged Mr. Jura to request a consultation with the management, but to no avail. The management justified it as their prerogative. This made the union open their second CBA.

Their second CBA with the company was not as fruitful. Their legal counsel (union) had renewed some of the existing provisions stated in the CBA. The management (company) bribed their counsel with some money.

“We continued our struggles. We filed the case with the National Labor Counsel. The issue was for equal profit sharing. Luckily, we won the case, after two long years of labor hearings!” he said.

Mr. Jura felt jubilation to win the case. He never sold his principle and dignity to the company. He would cherish it throughout his life span and share it to his kids. He resigned from his job with dignity and pride. He said, “Courage and Unity were the best weapons to Victory.”

“It was really difficult to handle the situation. I lost my job. I have a family that needed my support. Those disturbing events that happened to me did not diminish my strength and willingness to live and survive, but I strive more to keep on living,” said Mr. Jura.

He added, “If it happened to you and you lost your job come down and never get mad. It is not the end of the world for you. There are more opportunities for you to find a job. Jobs are there just around you. Think positively. Don’t just put yourself in a corner, remembering those bad experiences that happened to you before. Maintain a good relationship with your family. Trust and understanding are really needed in this situation.

“Your family is your outlet to discuss what is good. See your friends. They are willing to help you. They can refer you to another company that needs your services. Deliver yourself to the Good Lord. He is always behind you to support you, to guide you. He is the first and the last to seek for help because hope is there.”

At present Mr. Jura is working as a Secretary at a Construction Company in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It is said that Demonstrations and Rallies are adding to the fear of investors depriving ourselves of the investments needed to kick-start the economy but they also help to check our officials wrong doings!

Parenting for Children

This is a Computer Fundamentals class taking a...

Image via Wikipedia

Pushing to our children to excel in all academic performances causes depression among our children and teenagers. Depression would diminish our children’ ability to think actively and weakens their appetite for food; they would become not active in school and their studies; they would cheat during examinations to get high grades because if they failed their parents would punish them.

In our children cheating is also distinct. In school students cheat to get high grades during examinations. Cheating here cannot be stopped but we can help to reduce it and it should start at home. When they grow up they would become responsible, honest and God-fearing citizen.

Pushing also drive children to mingle bad company of friends, who are also experiencing the same problems. Parents should know that bad company corrupts good character of a child and the worse thing is that, this company of friends would encourage these children to engage them to use prohibited drugs. With these drugs they could find peace and temporary relief and forget their studies. Eventually these children would become drug addicts and would commit crimes in the future against society such as to cheat.

However, children should understand that parents want only the best for them and that is why they push them to excel in academic performance. Pushing should not distract them. In case they feel depressed, they should treat that feeling positively. They should realize that depression is normal feeling. The trick is to learn to manage it.

Teachers in school should treat their students like their own children. They should be patient to teach their students’ lessons with dedications and commitments. They should tell their students about the bad effects of cheating in their lives.

But what is of more importance is communication between parents and children. Parents should always communicate with their children as often as possible. Often communication can relieve their children’s emotional distress. Parents should find time to discuss with them all matters and to hear their side. Parents should understand that teenage is a delicate time in a child’s life. Children need guidance, understanding, compassion and love.

Another Source of Online Income for Writers

This is a marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate's own marketing efforts. Examples include rewards sites, where users are rewarded with cash or gifts, for the completion of an offer, and the referral of others to the site. This industry has four backbone players: the merchant, the network, the publisher and the customer. For writers this industry is another source of online income.

For those interested to become one of their affiliates visit the List of Affiliate Program Directories. You will see that there are hundreds or even thousands of them attracting publishers or affiliates to earn commission from a merchant or advertiser on the basis of actions they initiated. This could be from a visitor on their website purchasing a good, viewing an advert, clicking a link or more. And choose which affiliate programs will suit you.

Now to answer your question: How to make money with affiliate programs? Assuming you were already one of their affiliates. These are what you would do:

  1. Write a review of some of their products. Let people know how good they are. Include your affiliate link at the end of the review. Post your review to some free sites or to some paying sites you are writing with like Triond, Wikinut, Bukisa, Hubpage and other paying sites that accept original article reviews of all sorts of products. Imagine that – you are paid by the affiliate programs to review of their products and at the same time you are also earning for posting your original articles to some paying sites.
  2. Use your blog or create a new one for free at sites such as Blogger.com and other free hosting sites and post your review of their products, including your affiliate link. Then “ping” your blog at a site such as Pingomatic.com, so it gets picked up quickly by search engines or share your blog contents to some social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Google+ and Stumbleupon.
  3. Join popular marketing forums – there are hundreds of them across the Internet like WarrriorForum.com  and make frequent contributions to popular threads there. Be sure to go into your forum profile and edit your “signature”. Make a signature that includes your affiliate link, or a link to your own “review” website of their product. That way, every time you make a post, anyone who sees it will see your signature and potentially click on your affiliate link. Search engines will find them too.
  4. Once every few weeks post a press release at PRweb.com (optional), in which you include your favorable review of their product, along with your affiliate link. The site might charge you. If you pay them a small fee, they will guarantee that your press release is picked up by all major search engines, potentially sending you thousands of visitors.
  5. If you own an email list of newsletter subscribers or other people who have opted in to receive email offers from you, send them an email telling them about their affiliate programs websites, and feel free to use some of the text from their homepages in your email. Include your affiliate link at the end of the email. But do not spam in any way.
  6. Lastly, use Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising. Using a PPC account from Google Adwords, Yahoo, or from many others, you can easily generate income too. You can either send people directly to them using your affiliate link in your PPC ads, or you use your own blog site or website in which you have a review of their products, followed by your affiliate tracking link. Just make certain that the ad you create does not appear as though you work for them. Always check the terms of your agreement with the affiliate program before proceeding.

Additional information about Affiliate program: It is believed that Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet marketing methods to some degree, because affiliates often use regular advertising methods. Those methods include organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing, and in some sense display advertising.

Affiliate marketing is using one website to drive traffic to another—is a form of online marketing, which is frequently overlooked by advertisers. While search engines, e-mail, and website syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers, affiliate marketing carries a much lower profile. Still, affiliates continue to play a significant role in e-retailer’s marketing strategies.

This industry does not charge you to become one of their affiliates. This is free and open to all – who meet all the requirements they needed.

How True That Word is Sharper Than Sword

Lapu-Lapu monument on Mactan island, Cebu/Phil...

Image via Wikipedia Lapu-Lapu

Some Filipinos claimed that Magellan spread Christianity in the Philippines through friendship before people had accepted Christianity. However, I am still doubtful for that claim - my reason is that if Magellan really utilized friendship to spread Christianity in the country, there will be no bloody fight occurred between him and Lapu-Lapu that led to his death! I can say it now that Magellan used also swords to propagate Christianity not like Makdum, an Arabian missionary used his persuasive powers to introduce Islam in Philippines.

Many of us Filipinos are not aware that Islam is 141 years older than Christianity in the Philippines.

The Christian religion came to our land when, on March 16, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan landed on Homonhon Island of Samar on an expedition sent by King Philip of Spain. The primary objective of the expedition was to conquer some spicy islands and to spread Christianity. The inhabitants of Homonhon Island, who were pagans, were the first to be converted.

The expedition took Magellan and his forces to Panay and Cebu also. While the people of Panay accepted the new religion, Lapu-Lapu in Cebu opposed him. A war ensued, and Magellan was killed. Following his death, King Philip sent more expeditions, with soldiers and preachers, to spread Christianity. As a result, the Philippines became the first Christian country in Asia.

In contrast to the general welcome Christianity received in the archipelago, it found resistance in Mindanao where the inhabitants were already Muslims. Makdum/Mukdum, an Arabian missionary and scholar who arrived in Tubig Indangan, in 1380, introduced Islam in the Philippines. He introduced Islam with his persuasive powers.

The point I wanted to make is that Islam is not an interloper that came to a Christian country. It has been in the Philippines for approximately 631 years, compared to the 490 years that Christianity has been there.

In 1990 records, the Christian population in Philippines has reached to 91.5 percent of the total population compared to 5 percent of our brother Muslim Filipinos. And the other 3.5 percent are comprising other religions.

I still remember that during my elementary, high school and college days no teachers taught me about Islam that is part of Philippine history.
