The Seven Words for a Lung Disease

If you combined osis, coni, volcano, silico, microscopic, ultra and pneumono into a single word - the result is a name of a lung disease. And from doing it you can also improve the rate of your reading skills after you mastered the seven words.

I was surfing the net when I spotted the word Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis accidentally. So I have to look it from dictionaries and encyclopedias available online for its meaning – and the word is defined as a lung disease caused by the inhalation of very fine silica dust, mostly found in volcanos. It was originally coined simply to serve as the longest English word but has been used in several sources as an approximation of its originally intended definition. The name generally used to describe this condition is pneumoconiosis, which is much shorter.

The word Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis was originated from the seven words that has its own meaning such as:

• pneumono which is related to lungs (Latin, from Greek)
• ultra which is beyond (Latin, as in “ultraviolet”)
• microscopic which is extremely small (Latin/Old English, from Greek mikron, small, and skopos, view)
• silico which is silica (Latin)
• volcano which also volcano (Latin)
• coni which related to dust (Greek: konis, dust) and
• osis (Greek) which is disease or condition

The plural of this word is equally long – pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconioses. This 45-letter word, referred to by logologists as, first appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1936, and has also since appeared in the Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, the Random House Dictionary of the English Language, Unabridged, and Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary and Medical Dictionary.

But critics of its designation as the longest word complained that it is a technical term and not worthy of consideration as the longest word in general usage. It was said also that the word was originally intended as a hoax. Researchers discovered that the word was invented in 1935 by Everett M. Smith, president of the National Puzzlers’ League, at their annual meeting.

The word occurred in a newspaper headline about the meeting, after which it was picked up by an author of puzzle books. Members of the National Puzzlers’ League then campaigned to have it included in major dictionaries, eventually succeeding with the Oxford English Dictionary and Webster’s Third New International Dictionary.

How to Avoid Flaming in The Net

Flaming in the net occurs when someone attacked the person, insulted him personally, or criticized the person who authored the article. However, if someone has criticized the ideas injected by the author in his article, it’s not flaming and it is normal.

For the past ten years being a member to some Internet forum groups, I had noticed that flaming or bashing between members is happening. Some of the members are posting deliberately hostile messages without the awareness of other people’s feelings. Now many of forum groups owners and its moderators have agreed and work together to apply some forum rules and policies to be followed by its members. And who ever ignored its rules will be banned from accessing the forum. Some would be banned for few days, weeks, a month or would be kicked off from the forum permanently.

The reason why I liked forum groups is that I can share my articles which are open for critiques. Some of the members are sharing their honest suggestions how to improve my articles. But there are times I received comments not actually criticizing the idea I injected to my works but directly insulting my personality or my credibility as the author. However, I just ignored them and thought that maybe they missed to read the forum rules.

Speaking of forum rules and policies – I noticed that they are common to all of forum groups and other e-groups I have gone through such as:

• Members are not allowed to post defamatory, obscene, threatening, profane and hateful messages. The Admin or Moderators will ban members or offending posters.
• Commenting may include grammar correction. It may also focus on form and technicalities. Members should take all these constructively. 
• All criticisms should be taken constructively believing that there are no good or bad articles and no wrong or right comments. The important thing is that, if the author wished to send his articles to other publishing sites at least they are already polished.
• Members should justify their criticisms too, explaining their reasons when they note an article’s weaknesses. As much as possible, members should make suggestions on how to improve the article instead of just pointing out its weaknesses. 
• Members should avoid criticisms which may only offend but do not help the author in improving the article. Example: “This article is rubbish.”
• Comments which taunt, show contempt, disrespect or personally attack the author are not allowed. Members who make such comments will be penalized accordingly. 
• Discussions or debates like social issues and current events are allowed but should be done with respect among concerned members. Personal arguments among members are not tolerated and are subject to disciplinary action.

Members are also advice to take note the following:

• When someone makes a mistake – whether it’s a spelling error or a spelling flame, a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer – be kind about it.
• If it’s a minor error, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before reacting. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else.
• If you do decide to inform someone of a mistake, point it out politely and preferably by private email rather than in public.
• Give people the benefit of the doubt; assume they just don’t know any better. And never be arrogant or self-righteous about it.
• Just as it’s a law of nature that spelling flames always contain spelling errors, notes pointing out Netiquette violations are often examples of poor Netiquette.

According to Wikipedia Flaming also known as bashing, is hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users. Flaming usually occurs in the social context of an Internet forum, Internet Relay Chat, Usenet, by e-mail, game servers such as Xbox Live or Play station Network, and on video-sharing websites. It is frequently the result of the discussion of heated real-world issues such as politics, religion, and philosophy, or of issues that polarize sub-populations, but can also be provoked by seemingly trivial differences.

If flaming could not be avoided between members, my best and only suggestion is “Say Sorry” because I believe it is the best oil that lubricates any relationships!

Sex Education is One of My Advocate Subjects

High School is the most interesting phase of school life. On this stage new things and experiences are to be explored and to be enjoyed by young students. Also on this stage is the hot point for them to start to attract the opposite sexes.

Biology was My Favorite Subject

I still remember my favorite subject. It was biology that includes the parts and functions of the human body. I learned from that subject that our red blood cell is formed of molecules. If we saw it by our human eyes they are conjoined but if we will see it through a microscope the molecules of our blood are not hooked up as one. We also used the microscope to know how our semen looks like. We also learned that if we saw it by our human eyes they are the same as our red blood cell joined together but if we will see them through the power of microscope its molecules have its own space moving and stretching around.

The Five Sense Organs

And we also studied the five sense organs. We considered them as the most interesting part of our biology subject. Everybody in the classroom behaved while listening to our mentor, who was at that time a lady teacher. We jotted down all what she taught to us.

We have learned about the power of our eyes for sight or vision. Many poets described them as the gates for our souls but for me I described them as the gates for our sins.

The First to See and Perceive

Our eyes are the first to see and perceive what we see before sending them into our mind or brain. It is now the job of our brain to describe and to figure out what our eyes have seen. If our brain is full of humor, it can describe that particular thing or incident in a very colorful and lively conception.

Our Ears for Hearing or Audition

Then we discussed about the power of our ears for hearing or audition. We learned that our ears are responsible to detect the vibrations of any sound through an avenue such air. If we will see the anatomy of our ear, inside it is a section responsible to ascertain the mechanical motion and other vibrations before sending them to our brain.

The Power of Our Tongue and Mouth

Then our study was followed about the power of our tongue for taste and the power of our mouth to bite, to eat, to drink and to speak. We learned that it is the responsible of our tongue to identify and to differentiate sweet from salty, sour from bitter taste. Many scholars considered our mouth and tongue as the most dirtiest human body parts when it come to speak languages – they believed that the most dirtiest languages spoken by a person are perceived from the power of our mouth and tongue.

The Power of Our Nose

We also discussed about the power of our nose for smell. We learned that it is the responsible of our nose to detect the different types of odors from sweat, pungent odor from stagnant water, odor from our armpits, odor from decaying animals. Our nose can also identify sweet, salty, sour and bitter. And our nose is often used in the school of kindergarten as a subject for a puzzle question like – 1+1=2, 2+2=4, what is my nose for? The kindergarten pupils will answer “To smell Ma’am”.

The Sense of Touch

Then it followed the sense of touch. We learned from our discussion that our hands and fingers are not only the responsible for this sense. We can also use our tongue, mouth, skin, nails and hair for this sense of touch.

These five sense organs are our physiological capacities that provide inputs for perception and they are useful for our sex life and education.

Parenting for Children

Pushing to our children to excel in all academic performances causes depression among our children and teenagers. Depression would diminish our children’ ability to think actively and weakens their appetite for food; they would become not active in school and their studies; they would cheat during examinations to get high grades because if they failed their parents would punish them.

In our children cheating is also distinct. In school students cheat to get high grades during examinations. Cheating here cannot be stopped but we can help to reduce it and it should start at home. When they grow up they would become responsible, honest and God-fearing citizen.

Pushing also drive children to mingle bad company of friends, who are also experiencing the same problems. Parents should know that bad company corrupts good character of a child and the worse thing is that, this company of friends would encourage these children to engage them to use prohibited drugs. With these drugs they could find peace and temporary relief and forget their studies. Eventually these children would become drug addicts and would commit crimes in the future against society such as to cheat.

However, children should understand that parents want only the best for them and that is why they push them to excel in academic performance. Pushing should not distract them. In case they feel depressed, they should treat that feeling positively. They should realize that depression is normal feeling. The trick is to learn to manage it.

Teachers in school should treat their students like their own children. They should be patient to teach their students’ lessons with dedications and commitments. They should tell their students about the bad effects of cheating in their lives.

But what is of more importance is communication between parents and children. Parents should always communicate with their children as often as possible. Often communication can relieve their children’s emotional distress. Parents should find time to discuss with them all matters and to hear their side. Parents should understand that teenage is a delicate time in a child’s life. Children need guidance, understanding, compassion and love.  

 

How True That Word is Sharper Than Sword

Some Filipinos claimed that Magellan spread Christianity in the Philippines through friendship before people had accepted Christianity. However, I am still doubtful for that claim - my reason is that if Magellan really utilized friendship to spread Christianity in the country, there will be no bloody fight occurred between him and Lapu-Lapu that led to his death! I can say it now that Magellan used also swords to propagate Christianity not like Makdum, an Arabian missionary used his persuasive powers to introduce Islam in Philippines.

Many of us Filipinos are not aware that Islam is 141 years older than Christianity in the Philippines. 

The Christian religion came to our land when, on March 16, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan landed on Homonhon Island of Samar on an expedition sent by King Philip of Spain. The primary objective of the expedition was to conquer some spicy islands and to spread Christianity. The inhabitants of Homonhon Island, who were pagans, were the first to be converted.

The expedition took Magellan and his forces to Panay and Cebu also. While the people of Panay accepted the new religion, Lapu-Lapu in Cebu opposed him. A war ensued, and Magellan was killed. Following his death, King Philip sent more expeditions, with soldiers and preachers, to spread Christianity. As a result, the Philippines became the first Christian country in Asia.

In contrast to the general welcome Christianity received in the archipelago, it found resistance in Mindanao where the inhabitants were already Muslims. Makdum/Mukdum, an Arabian missionary and scholar who arrived in Tubig Indangan, in 1380, introduced Islam in the Philippines. He introduced Islam with his persuasive powers.

The point I wanted to make is that Islam is not an interloper that came to a Christian country. It has been in the Philippines for approximately 631 years, compared to the 490 years that Christianity has been there. 

In 1990 records, the Christian population in Philippines has reached to 91.5 percent of the total population compared to 5 percent of our brother Muslim Filipinos. And the other 3.5 percent are comprising other religions.

I still remember that during my elementary, high school and college days no teachers taught me about Islam that is part of Philippine history.

Today, I admit that the idea I injected for this article is the result of my foolishness. It was said that Plagiarism in some contexts is considered theft or stealing but from the point of view of the law, it is a non-existing concept. Plagiarism is not mentioned in any current statute, either criminal or civil.

A number of reasons I see that will prove that what we read from the Internet are 100% plagiarized pieces. This might include too of our original writings published on our blog sites and other paying sites. As I always said, don’t take this seriously. This is only a warm up guys.

Now I will ask you to analyze this statement: When we say original works - it is created or invented works by as being new respectively (from the first stroke of the point till the last stroke of the point to finish it), and thus can be distinguished from reproductions, clones, forgeries, or derivative works or it is a created work not received from others nor one copied based on the work of others.

Plagiarism is Not a Crime--how About Copyright Infringement

Plagiarism is not a crime but is disapproved more on the grounds of moral offence.

While Copyright infringement is a violation of the rights of a copyright holder, when material protected by copyright is used without consent.

Speaking of crime it is about the breach of rules or laws for which some governing authority can ultimately prescribe a conviction. Moral here is pertaining to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong. I can still remember, when I took up my creative writing with The Writers Bureau in Manchester, London in 1999 and Journalism and Short Story Writing with the ICS (International Correspondence School) Pennsylvania, USA in 2000 – my tutors told me that titles and ideas have no copyrights – that means anyone can use them.

Also I was told that copyrighted materials after at least 75 years starting the day the author died can be considered as domain materials. And domain materials can be used by anybody that include the Holy Bible and Fairy Tales.

But when I referred them to an encyclopedia the definitions of Plagiarism and Copyright Infringement are far beyond of what I have learned from my tutorial schooling. Does it mean my tutors were liars?

Anyway, to avoid from plagiarism and copyright infringement charges – one should ask first the permission or authorization from the copyright holder of copyrighted material and give credits to the authors for their original works. 

Sex Education for Children, Teenagers and Even Adults--part Five

Sex education should be taught with values and virtues – needed to reduce premarital sex, early marriages and moral depravity. The youth should be trained to become responsible and morally upright citizens.

Sex education should be taught to our children with values and virtues. Under values we have ethical and moral, doctrinal and ideological, social and aesthetic values. These values are typically been studied in sociology, anthropology, social psychology, moral philosophy and business ethics.

Ethical and Moral values address questions about morality and the concepts of good and evil or the right and wrong.

Doctrinal and Ideological address about religious and political values.

Social values address about social norms or behaviors and cues within a society or group.

Aesthetic values address about the nature of beauty, art, taste, and with the creation and appreciation of beauty.

Children and youths should be taught how to cultivate values and how to admire them. All these should be integrated with sex education - to help them appreciate the beauty of sex as a gift of God to mankind in the context of marriage not from what they discovered from pornographic magazines and video shows.

I believe that the best teachers ever produced in the world to teach the offspring are the parents either they are biological parents or an adoptive parent. The parents should be the first to draw the actions to teach the children about life and their sexuality and it will start at home.

I don’t understand and maybe I will not accept it also when parents find it hard to explain sex to their children when they begin asking questions. Mostly of the time parents often let their children learn about it by themselves. If the parents detest doing their part  in their children exploration for such a delicate matter their friends might feed the meaningless with complication and possible undesired conclusion.

Sex here is not only about sexual act. It regards also about all the aspects of life and its existence as a human being. Sometimes parents forgot that they are the first people in the world to cherish their children that moments they arrived in their lives.

When our first child arrived, I was also inside the delivery room when my beloved wife had labored for our first baby girl. I saw where the child came out. I heard her first cry and I was the first to kiss her pool of blood before her mother. I was the one who brought her to the lavatory where she had got her first bath. I saw how the nurse cut off her umbilical cord. And when our child made her first junk, I was the first to clean it.

To sum up it all, it is the parents who really know better about their children than any other people in the world. It is the parents who know better what their children wants, likes and dislikes. There are many ways to tell and to teach our children if we, parents really are willing to teach them.

Should we wait our children coming home with a bold magazine, CD and DVD from their peers and open it to us and tell us that this is the way you made us Daddy and Mommy?

Some people said that SEX is the ultimate expression of love and no amount of education could change a person’s sexual behavior, particularly that of the sexually active youth. If you will be asked – will you accept this reason and forget about sex education for our children and youths?

I am not here to tell the world that what I am sharing to you should be accepted. I know of course, everyone has his own right for his views and opinions and we should respect them in return.

Thirty-five years ago, I was a first year high school student. I was 15year old at that time. One of my female classmates who was also at my age had become the apple of everyone’s eyes. She was beautiful with black long hair down her back. She smiles beautifully with dimple on her cheeks.

One of my male classmates was attracted about her. He courted her and showed his love for the girl. And in a short of time they became young lovers. Now the problem started. Three months before finishing the school year – the girl got pregnant. These young lovers became the hot subject in our school that caused them to be expelled out. If we will try to analyze the incident, we will arrive a question for sure like – who will suck the problem?

Sex education for me is a healthy move. If parents become too hesitant to talk openly to their children about sex and just let their children learn about it by themselves – I guess there will be more unwed mothers who are only in their teens. And maybe more abortions could be expected.

Imagine this – having sexual urges at this young age with their shallow knowledge of the cause and effects of replicating acts they see on adult DVDs, this could result in unwanted babies and sometimes a deadly disease. In this world of high technology nothing can be hidden from children!

For the past fifty years I am lively kicking off in this planet, I observe that every time a person heard and read the word SEX – he immediately defines it maliciously as sexual intercourse, foreplay or love-making with a sexual partner. Sex is also about all aspects of sexuality including: body image, sexual orientation, sexual pleasure, values, decision making, communication, dating, relationships and many more.

Three months ago, I read the news story shared to me from one of my forum groups which was about a girl who was a ten-year old who got pregnant and delivered her first baby boy on her 11th year birthday, after she played the “Father and Mother” with her playmate who was also about her age, I was really shocked.

From that story, I decided to do some research for this article. And if lucky, this will be one of my advocate subjects to tell the world that sex education should be taught to children, teenagers and even to adults – to correct misconceptions about sex.

There are many reason to consider why sex education should be taught to youngsters most especially such as:

(1) Children and teenagers need to be educated early about sex to become aware and to become more responsible in dealing with matter.

(2) Teaching with this matter should start at home but parents should refrain from using the word SEX to avoid any malicious meanings that the word may transport to young minds. They can use synonyms for it such as male and female gender, femininity, manhood, manliness, masculinity, sexuality, womanhood, womanliness and many more.

(3) Since malice among children and youths start at a young age, teaching about sex education is a necessity – to avoid kids to indulge in premarital sex at early age.

(4) Aside from home sex education should be also taught in school.

(5) Teenagers lives are crucial because this is the time when they are attracted to the opposite sexes. Sex education is a good move for children and teenagers to let them fully understand the meaning of their being.
